MA Games Design - Low Poly P9 Pistol Part 3

 Low Poly P9 Pistol Development

Just a quick post today with a few more development screenshots of the low poly P9 pistol. Again the main thing around the development of this piece and what I am learning about low poly is that it is far more complex that just making a simple model. The idea of constraining yourself within a low poly count and trying to get dynamic shapes and omitting some details while retaining others in the prop makes you really focus on what is important in a weapon's design at it's core, and even just in shapes themselves.

In the above screenshots I have once again further refined the shape of the top slide, mainly towards the rear of the part I added what look like machined bevels the run down both of the upper lengths of the slide and also creates these bevelled triangular corners at the very back of the pistol. It may be harder to see in a screenshot without texturing, however once textures are applied I hope it becomes a little more noticeable.

I also added in the ejection port that sits roughly towards the middle of the slide, this is where the empty casings for the pistol cartridges are released after firing. As you can probably see it wasn't all too hard to model, it just required some faces being deleted out and the left over edges extruding down to for the lips of the ejection port. Inside the gun both the barrel and the housing for the firing pin with sit underneath this port and will help solidify the pistol once more.

In this next selection of images I have refined the width and shaping of the trigger guard. As I had it originally modelled it was far too "chunky" and sat flush with the faces of the lower receiver and the grip, however removing some excess faces and bringing the shapes in, it now follows the contours of the actual P9 pistol a lot better. I still feel like I have a little work to finish the trigger guard off, however I am trying to be cautions of refining the shape too much and straying outside the bounds of the low poly nature of this piece.

There are a few more details and parts to add to this piece before I unwrap the UV's and take it into texturing such as; front and rear iron sights, magazine and mag release button, barrel and firing pin housing. However these are rather simple parts to model and shouldn't take too long considering they do not need much detail.
