Project 2 - Coffee Mug - Photogrammetry Asset (Failed)

Project 2 - Coffee Mug (Failed)

So for this asset I attempted to photograph a coffee mug. During the shoot I had issues balancing the mug to get good angles and coverage of the whole object, this was due to the weight of the mug and it would roll to one side or the other depending which side I was trying to get photos of. I had no issues with it being upright, however I tried to get what photos I could. Below are some of the photos from the shoot.

As you can see the images are very dark as I was trying to not overexpose them while shooting, however due to the ceramics I still got some reflective light capture.

I then tried masking out these photos in photoshop however due to the black parts of the cup and the lighting, photoshop has issue with masking the object and was not detecting large portions of it. Also since some of the mug parts are out of focus on various photos this made detection harder. Because of this I decided to alter the photos in lightroom to make it easier for photoshop to detect them.

A lot of artefacts were brought out as I had to increase the exposure enough to reveal all the details of the mug.

This editing in lightroom helped me mask out the photos I had of the cup, this was done individually per photo and I had some issues with only a few photos.

I then tried to use the masked photos in reality capture in order to see what results I would get. Since I had used this exact method on the apple and other test objects and got decent enough results I expected it to work. However the program wasn't able to detect the cup as a full object and I was unsure why, instead I got very poor results. I tried changing various values within the alignment setting and it was still unable to create a very good result.

After spending numerous hours editing the photos and then altering settings and watching tutorials on youtube or scouring the internet to try and find answers, I resorted to reducing the amount of images to see if I could just get the body of the mug without the top and bottom attached, however I encountered the exact same issue as the previous times I tried to align the object.

I am unsure as to why I was encountering these issues as I had watched many tutorials use less inputs and varying qualities of photos and still achieving results better than mine, but unfortunately this model was unusable and I was wasting more time trying to produce a result and so I decided to focus on other tasks.
