Tavern Scene - Sword , Shield & Axe

Tavern Scene - Sword , Shield & Axe

So I wanted to work on some of the smaller props to start layering up the scene with added detail for the viewer to observe. These objects will begin to add context to the story of the scene. I worked on a Sword that had a Dwarven Style to it for the warrior as well as a shield for him. The reason why is a traditional trope amongst fantasy settings, including D&D is you always see the warrior up in the front lines defending everyone with a large shield and a one handed weapon. People can also interpret the warrior as a knight if they draw that connection easier than a warrior or fighter.

I am also adapting my own style when it comes to modelling this scene as I tend to focus on making things look super realistic but I understand that since it is just myself working on this I wouldn't have the time to model every object within the scene to be hyper realistic so I am taking a more stylised approach with the models and experimenting with my style to see what can be achieved.

With the sword I aimed to model in some notches into the blade in order to symbolise that it wasn't a brand new piece of equipment and it has seen it's share of battles much like its owner. The Tall shield is also signifying someone who wants to use a defensive item that offers the most protection but at the same time since it is bulky and large it is quite taxing to carry around with them all the time so requires a lot of strength and stamina to wield and carry, again giving a bit more of an idea of the kind of person who uses it.

Next is the axe I modelled for the Barbarian character.

Traditionally in fantasy media a barbaric/ barbarian character is seen as hotheaded, someone who can fly into a rage easily, a combatant that favours either a large two handed weapon to inflict the most devastation or they use 2 of the same weapon in a dual wield combo in order to inflict fast and frenzied strikes.

I went with the hand axe since I had already designated the sword for the warrior, as well as this a hand axe has versatility in not only being used traditionally to slash opponents but it's shape allows someone to hook other objects such as shields and pull them away or disarm an opponent by hooking their weapon and pulling it away, or just holding onto the opponent themselves to close the distance so they are unable to fight effecively.

All of this put together in my mind how brutal and savage the Vikings were and they share a lot with fantasy barbarians in the way they fight, and so I chose a traditional Norse/Scandinavian style with the leather hand wrap for the Axe.
